The Opening Of Our New Library!
Assessment without Levels
The Government has made a change in the way that children in schools are to be assessed. This is to tie in with the New National Curriculum that became statutory in September 2014. This is a new way of thinking for schools, and assessment will look very different to how it has done for the past 20 years. The aim of this letter is to give you some clear information about the changes that are happening in education across the country and what that means for the children at Ryhill.
The End of Curriculum Levels
The Department for Education (DfE) has decided that children are no longer to be given a level to determine their achievement and that it is up to individual schools how they choose to measure a child’s achievement throughout their time at primary school.
So why are levels disappearing?
The DfE want to avoid what has been termed ‘The Level Race’ where children have moved through the old National Curriculum levels quickly to achieve higher attainment. The feeling from the DfE was that the old national curriculum and the levels system failed to adequately ensure that children had a breadth and depth of knowledge at each national curriculum level.
So what does this mean for you and Ryhill?
The changes mean that we are adapting the way we report attainment and progress to you. These judgements will be based on the new National Curriculum framework. Your child’s teacher will be able to give you information on how well they are working in terms of breadth and depth, their attitude to learning, how much effort they are making and progress reflected in their class work.
