The Governing Body works alongside the Head Teacher and the staff in determining the aims and curriculum policy of the school and fostering good relations with Parents and the community. The full Governing Body meets six times per school year with additional regular meetings of Committees such as Personnel, Finance and Behaviour and Discipline. A great deal of time is also given by Governors outside of the formal meetings to ensure all pupils at the school receive the best possible education and care.

People from all areas of the community can become a school Governor if they are interested and concerned about children's education and willing to give their time freely and show commitment to the role. Elections for any vacancies are dealt with as they arise with parents being balloted if more than one candidate comes forward.

The primary objective for the Governor's is the welfare and education of all children at Ryhill Junior, Infant and Nursery School, to ensure they fulfill their full potential and remain happy to attend school. If you have any concerns about your child's education or care please contact staff at the school or any of the Governors.

The Governing Body supports the school to ensure that all pupils are offered high quality education relevant to their own needs and abilities. The schools policy on Special Educational Needs and Inclusion  has recently been revised to take into account the changes required in the Codes of Practice and is available in school to view by parents if required. The Policy reflects the school's commitment to ensure it meets the needs of all pupils as we believe each child is of equal worth and we will ensure that each has equal rights within our school.

We aim to ensure that each child has equal access to the whole school curriculum with individual learning programs structured to meet any pupil's special educational needs. The school has produced an Accessibility Plan  which is in line with Wakefield Districts 5Year Plan for the development of inclusive learning for pupils with special educational needs; this Plan is available in School for the information of parents.

The school operates the same fair and unprejudiced admissions policy for all prospective pupils. The individual needs of any child with a disability would be assessed with the help and guidance of the Local Authority and the child's parents with any necessary adaptations carried out as soon as possible when funding is available.

The school has good accessibility for wheelchairs with ramps to all the pupil entrances improving the ease of entrance for any pupils with mobility problems and the whole of the school being available on one floor.

SCHOOL SECURITY

The school and the Governing Body are committed to providing a safe and happy environment in which children can be educated. Pupils are supervised on entering and exiting the school and whilst on breaks. The main reception door is alarmed to prevent unauthorised admission and all pupil doors are supervised by teaching staff whenever open, otherwise they are kept closed and can only be opened from inside the building.

The main vehicle entrance to school is now kept closed and only authorised vehicles are permitted into the school grounds at times when pupil safety can be maintained. This has been to protect pupils and their younger siblings from possible accidents caused by cars parking in and maneuvering around the small front playground at the time when pupils are exiting and being collected from school. We would like to thank parents for their help in maintaining the safety of our children and ask for their continued cooperation in ensuring that any risks involving car transportation are kept to a minimum.

HEALTH & SAFETY

The Governing Body gives high priority to Health & Safety and has regular discussions about related issues. Routine assessments are carried out by the school's management team to ensure that they are aware of any potential hazards so that necessary steps can be taken to minimise them.

The Governing Body monitors the arrangement for all trips and visits to ensure that they are mad in accordance with the approved Health & Safety guidelines. Prior assessments are made by staff and overseen by the Governors so that all visits are enjoyable and educational. Particular care is taken with residential trips.

The Health & Safety Initiative is now having positive influences on many aspects of school life. The children now enjoy many different fruits at break time and have access to drinking water throughout the day. Recycling initiatives are continuing and will shortly be extended.

The Governing Body monitors the arrangements for all trips and visits to ensure that they are made in accordance with the approved Health & Safety Guidelines.

SCHOOL TRIPS & ACTIVITES

There have been many organised trips for the children throughout the years which have included; Residential visits to Kingswood Activity Centre which has replaced the previous visits to Hornsea Centre; Cannon Hall Farm, Sundowners Activity Centre and Wakefield Theatre. The Choir have made several successful visits to Hemsworth Arts and Community College and Crofton High School to involve Year 6 children with their Secondary Schools and to strengthen contact between the schools.

Many interesting visits by outside organisations have been enjoyed by all areas of the school: Kylie the Kangaroo Road Show visited during our "Safety Week" along with the Police, Fire Service, and representatives to advise on drug awareness and road safety. The Wakefield Travel Awareness Team visited school to work with pupils in producing a map of the village locating their house and establishing the safest route to school. Barnsley Football Club visited the school as part of their Community Development Program and offered pupils free tickets for a home match. The Mighty Zulu Nation Company providing outstanding entertainment to the children in school and also at Hemsworth Arts and Community College and the Dog Trust talked about responsibility to animals.

The children have entertained us with many events, and we have sold numerous cuddly Ducks to provide support for the Wakefield Hospice. We have had a scary Halloween Discos and the children even had a "scary lunch" provided by the kitchen staff. Successful Book Fairs are held to encourage the enjoyment of books by all ages in school and raise much needed funds to purchase books for school.

The Healthy Schools Initiative continues to flourish and has, and will continue to have, many positive influences on school life.

Family Literacy and Numeracy Courses have again been held to involve parents in the education of their children and provide them with an insight into the way Literacy and Numeracy is taught in everyday education.
