SCHOOL COUNCIL Our School Council consists of 2 elected pupils from each class with a member of staff in an advisory role. We have 12 members in our team, with every member being elected by their class. The Council have a duty to represent the other pupils in school, to express their opinions, communicate with staff and the community to enable changes to be made to benefit the school and its pupils. The council have achieved many things since they were first formed in 2004 We helped clean up the local environment by doing a survey on dog fouling, we contacted our local MP, John Trickett, to make him aware of the increasing problem around our school and alerted the Local Authority. Both investigated the problem which led to the installation of dog waste bins throughout the village. We were involved in the design of playground markings for the Junior, Infant and Nursery playgrounds. We met contractors and decided on the final designs. We have also applied for funding from Wakefield Children's Fund. This involved lots of hard work putting together an interesting application. The funding has recently been granted and we now have permanent outside basketball posts and a set of gardening equipment for the Environmental Club. Our thanks to Glyn Banks Builders Ltd. who very kindly installed our basketball posts for free. Council members regularly do a 'Litter Patrol' around the school grounds to keep our school looking its best. The full council meets every other Thursday in the Library to discuss matters raised by pupils and suggestions for making our school a safer, better place to be. Finally, we would all like to say we are very proud of our school and its 100 yr (almost) history and we would be pleased to speak to any pupil who may have suggestions for improvements.
Our school has recently been awarded the Silver Award for Eco-Schools. To gain this award we had to form an Eco-school Action Team. This team consists of 8 pupils, a school governor, a Teaching Assistant and the school Premises Manager. We then had to devise an action plan. Targets are:
We also had to write an ECO CODE: Save energy Always turn off dripping taps Veg + fruit can be recycled Everyone should look after the Environment
GENERATION GREEN The school council's Eco team have joined Generation Green which is run by British Gas. This scheme encourages everyone to save energy. If we save energy we can earn points and get green rewards for school. We can use these rewards for various items including Botanical kits, camera nesting boxes, etc. Parents, family and staff can help us collect green leaves by logging on to www.generationgreen.co.uk , click on family and friends then complete the report. The report takes less than 5 minutes to fill in. all that is required is a few answers to questions involving the size of your homes and the energy that you use. By doing this you will earn leaves that you can donate to school via the web site. NEW WILDLIFE & SENSORY GARDEN The team have looked at the schools pond area and have drawn up some plans to improve the area. They want to make it accessible to all children at break times so they need to erect a fence around the pond for safety. The area will be called the Wildlife and Sensory Garden. The group are hoping to encourage more local wildlife to the garden by erecting bird boxes, bug hotels, bat boxes and feeding stations. They would also like some sensory activities like play panels with musical instruments and wildlife identification panels. We are funding this ourselves by submitting applications for grants to organisations that support green issues, donations from various sources and fund raising. We hope you can help us with our cause. Thank you from the school Eco Team. Our Thanks to Mrs. Edwards - our Star advisor!
